In lighting industry, people think LED dimming is very easy for LED dimmable driver. This is a big mistake. In fact, its application is not so good. Why? Is the technology not mature? Next, let’s analyze its dimming technology.
Firstly, let’s learn the volt characteristics of LED driver. The volt characteristics refers to the current passes LED P-N with the change of voltage. A complete volt curve includes forward characteristics and reverse characteristics. Usually, reverse characteristics change steeply. When the voltage exceeds the threshold, the current will on the top trend. Meanwhile, the forward voltage is determined by the forward current.
Secondly, let’s see Triac dimming mode. The common incandescent lamps and halogen lamps use Triac driver. Because incandescent lamps and halogen lamps is pure resistance device. Their input voltage should be sine wave. Because the current waveform is the same as voltage waveform. Only changing the virtual value, the LED dimmable driver can realize its fullest dimming potential.
Thirdly, let’s discuss PWM dimming mode. LED is a diode which can switch on or off quickly. If you use PWM driver, the brightness will be changed.
Nowadays, its applications are in a mess. But we can not deny that it has a bright future. We should pay more attention on research and development of LED dimmable driver. It is believed that it will bring benefits to all of us.
